Patch Management Engine (PME) v2.11.2GA

We are pleased to announce a new version of PME is being released to GA today.

This release contains 3 main updates.

Windows 11 Upgrade Improvements (N-sight and N-central)

When updating devices from Windows 10 to 11 some devices were installing an older version (21H2) of Windows 11 rather than the latest (23H2). With this build the latest version will always be used.

This is particularly beneficial as the original versions of Windows 11 were not as stable as the latest.

Cumulative update install improvements (N-central offline patching only)

Through support cases and internal investigations we have seen significant benefits and improved success rates when installing patches using msu files via WUSA rather than cab files via DISM. A device can be offered both updates however we have now put prioritisation on the MSU file over the cab version of it.

Note: both N-central and N-sights online patch engine already prioritises the msu.

Registry Key Control Changes (N-central only)

The patch profile option “Limited to administrators” can no longer be reliably controlled by N-central over all operating systems due to depreciation by MSFT, therefore we recommend when using this option you also leverage GPO to ensure it is set. The profile screen UI will be updated to reflect this.

The current GA 2.11 version will fail over to “N-central activity only” when “Limited to Administrators” has been selected but not successfully applied however this would in turn inadvertently clash with the settings applied outwith N-central due to our periodic checking and re-application of the reg keys. As of this build that has been stopped.

N-sight: Live Two-way User Chat  for Mac Devices

We’re excited to let you know that following the success of one of the most requested features for N-sight: Live, two-way user chat! which was launched on Windows devices, we have brought that same capability to Mac’s

It means technician users are now able to chat directly with their customer users, offering a brand-new communications and helpdesk support channel:

  • Improve the customer care experience for end-users with added convenience and choice
  • Notify users proactively and help resolve issues more quickly
  • Boost technician efficiency, including the ability to run multiple chats simultaneously

Here are a couple of screenshots that show the new feature:

The new chat feature uses the same chat widget that’s already available with Take Control and Remote Background Management sessions. The beauty of this update is that now you’re able to use it directly, without the need to first initiate a Take Control or RBM session. The only requirement is that the device in question has Take Control or RBM enabled, as the User Chat feature uses the Take Control agent.

Here’s a summary of the User Chat features:

  • Technicians can have multiple chat windows open at the same time
  • Use Roles & Permissions to show or hide the feature for users (it is off by default for users based on the ‘client’ role)
  • Chat sessions are logged in the User Audit Report
  • A user can minimize the chat window and also highlight-&-copy chat text
  • The chat window supports all standard RMM languages
  • Devices require Take Control and/or RBM to be installed
  • There’s no additional charge for the feature

We’re planning to release the new User Chat feature to all territories in the next few days, so keep an eye out for the new feature the next time you log in – it will soon be there!
