Today, we’re very excited to announce not one, but two major feature updates in RMM: Managed Antivirus for Apple Mac workstations, and a significant enhancement to SNMP-based monitoring of Network Devices, with the introduction of a new Custom Checks Wizard.
Managed Antivirus for Mac
The Mac team at SolarWinds MSP is excited to bring you a release candidate for the most requested Mac feature by our partners: Managed Antivirus for Mac.
We designed Managed Antivirus for Mac to work almost identically to MAV for Windows. Mac devices running the 3.2.0 RC Agent can display an “Antivirus” tab in the South Pane with scan results and quarantined items. Scan results also appear alongside Windows results in Antivirus reports.
The Mac Agent uses the same laptop and desktop workstation policies as Windows devices. Some features are not Mac-compatible, and those can be found in the policy settings dialog.
Mac devices at clients and sites that have Managed Antivirus enabled with the Bitdefender engine will automatically receive Managed Antivirus when you upgrade them to 3.2.0 RC Agent. Simply upgrade to the new Mac agent and be protected.
Known issues:
- On install, devices running macOS 10.13.2 and higher will display a dialog to users to approve loading a kernel extension and TCC permissions. If they don’t approve, the product will continue to function but will display an “at risk” warning in the application’s user interface. This dialog cannot be approved remotely (i.e. via Take Control).
- No support for proxy servers in this version. This will be fixed before GA.
- Checks and reports are not in this version. This will be fixed before GA.
Custom Checks Wizard for Network Devices
RMM’s Network Devices module lets you easily discover and monitor your customers’ networking equipment. In the past few months we’ve made significant updates to the Network Devices module, primarily by adding support for more and more vendors—but what if we don’t yet support a device that you want to monitor?
We’re excited to announce the solution to that particular issue—a brand new Custom Checks Wizard that lets you add new SNMP-based checks to any network device in RMM.
In addition to being user-friendly and intuitive, the Custom Checks Wizard provides you with some advanced and flexible features:
- Need to grab a lot of data? We’ve got you. You can configure RMM to only grab a certain combination of SNMP OID and SNMP Index, or you can have RMM automatically start monitoring all of the entities under a particular SNMP table. That latter option is really useful when you want to monitor all of the hardware (fans, power supplies, etc.) on a device.
- Make ugly data a thing of the past. You can manipulate the data the device returned via SNMP, you can perform calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), and you can assign Units to the data, so that they get displayed in RMM in the most valuable, easily-understood format possible.
- Thresholds done right. You can choose when the check will transition to a Failed state by specifying number ranges for Normal and Failed (great if you’re getting integer values back from SNMP), and you can also specify regular expressions for thresholding text (string) values.
Launching the Custom Checks Wizard is easy: Click on a device in the Network Devices tab, and click Add Check -> SNMP Check in the South Pane. That’ll launch the Custom Check Wizard, which will guide you through the 4 easy steps you need to take:
Step 1: Tell us the basics
Step 2: Create an SNMP query to tell RMM what SNMP data to grab
Step 3: Add a Metric to tell RMM what to do with that SNMP data
Step 4: Confirm the alert settings for the check, and review the summary
That’s all there is to it! Once you’ve saved the check, hit the Refresh button in the South Pane, and your new check will be displayed. It’ll start reporting back data in no time.
We’re committed to make the Network Devices module a valuable part of your MSP business, and welcome your feedback on the Custom Check Wizard specifically and the Network Devices module in general. Look for more great features coming in the near future.
