What’s New in the Cove?
Management Console
Profiles – New Performance and Limits Settings
Based on your feedback, we’ve added a new Performance and Limits Settings tab to Profiles which includes the following settings: Bandwidth Limitations, Storage Limits, and Windows Backup Exclusions. This gives you a single, centralized place to manage your backup configurations and encourages migration to Enhanced Retention Policies.
Bandwidth Limitations – Control how much network bandwidth your backups consume through granular scheduling options.
Storage Limits – Set caps for your backups through two new parameters:
- Max Selection Size (total) – limits the total size of data selected for backup
- Max Used Storage – limits how much storage your backups may consume
Windows Backup Exclusions – Exclude files listed in the Windows FilesNotToBackup registry key from your backups.
These settings are now read-only in Classic Products. If you need help migrating from Classic Products to Enhanced Retention Policies, please contact our support team.
Backup Manager
Native Apple Silicon Support
Previously, the Backup Manager agent ran on Apple Silicon devices through Rosetta 2, Apple’s compatibility layer for Intel-based software. Now, the Backup Manager agent runs natively on M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips, taking full advantage of the ARM-based architecture Apple Silicon was designed around.
Apple Silicon has become the standard across the Mac lineup, and native support means your backups now run more efficiently without the translation layer in between.
No action is required on your behalf. ARM-based devices will be automatically transitioned to the new Backup Manager through auto-update.
Expanded Linux Support
We’ve extended our Linux support to the latest major distributions and updated our underlying components to keep pace with modern filesystems. This will ensure reliable backup and recovery on these systems without any additional configuration needed.
New Supported Distributions
- Debian 13 – full backup and restore coverage is now available
- Ubuntu 26.04 – full backup and restore coverage is now available
Cove Rescue Media Updated to Debian 13 – ensuring it stays current with the latest drivers, security updates, and hardware compatibility improvements.
Filesystem Support
- EXT4 – new filesystem features introduced in recent Linux kernels are now supported
- XFS – new filesystem features introduced in recent Linux kernels are now supported
Important: Backup Manager Security Enhancements and TLS Interception
We’ve recently delivered security enhancements to Backup Manager that strengthen the security of data in transit and protect against potential man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks.
As part of our ongoing commitment to improving security, these changes are not compatible with any form of TLS interception, including Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) or SSL/TLS inspection performed by firewalls, proxies, or security gateways.
If TLS interception is enabled in your environment, it will interfere with secure communication between Backup Manager and our services.
As a result, you may experience:
- Backup failures or interruptions
- Devices not syncing correctly with the platform
- Connectivity issues between Backup Manager and cloud services
Starting November 2nd, these security enhancements will be enforced. To ensure uninterrupted backup operations, you must take action before this date:
- Disable TLS interception for Backup Manager traffic, or
- Fully exclude Backup Manager endpoints from any DPI/SSL inspection
If you need any assistance, please contact our support team.
Microsoft 365
OneDrive Restore Wizard Enhancements
We’ve redesigned the OneDrive restore wizard to be easier to use and more consistent with other restore wizards. Additionally, user lists now load immediately on the ‘User selection’ step so that you can perform restores faster.
Exchange Backup Performance Optimization
We’ve eliminated unnecessary processing of unchanged data for Exchange backups, resulting in an approximate 30% average reduction in backup session duration. This will help deliver tighter RPOs and more reliable completion within maintenance windows.
Backup Session Resumption After Interruption
Interrupted backup sessions now continue from where they left off rather than restarting from scratch. Once backups resume, fully backed-up items are skipped and only partially processed /or pending items are picked up. For customers with large environments, this means a single interruption no longer sets the entire backup session back to zero, reducing the risk of gaps in coverage.
