The SolarWinds Backup team is happy to announce that we’ve just added support for three new versions of MySQL on Windows and Linux in the standalone edition of SolarWinds Backup 19.6:

• MySQL 5.6
• MySQL 5.7
• MySQL 8.0

We now support the following MySQL data sources:

MySQL Backup Requirements

Backup Manager offers backup and recovery service for MySQL databases on all the supported operating systems.
Backup Manager handles MySQL versions 5.0.22, 5.1, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7 and 8.0 on Windows and Linux. On Linux, we require glibc 2.5 or higher. Backup Manager handles MySQL versions 5.0.22, 5.1 and 5.5 on MacOS.
You can add multiple MySQL instances to your backup selection (if they are installed on the same machine).

• Backup Manager must be installed on the MySQL server that you want to back up.
• The MySQL server must be started as a service at the time a backup session starts.
• Full permissions (with all privileges) to a MySQL database are required to back up the MySQL data source.
• On Linux, glibc 2.5 or higher is required.

Types of Backups

Backup Manager has three types of MySQL backups. They are version dependent.

1. Cold backups (the MySQL server is stopped while the backup session runs; it is necessary that no third-party applications keep the database forcibly open at that time).
2. Warm backups (the MySQL server is locked for write operations while the backup session runs, but is still accessible for read operations).
3. Hot backups (the MySQL server keeps functioning while a backup session is running).

Please note: With the release of these MySQL additions, we have expanded the database schema, and software-only customers using MySQL are required to upgrade to the latest Storage Node version to support the new schema.

For the same reason, all customers are advised to upgrade any Recovery Console instances to the latest 19.6 version, and to upgrade any bare-metal recovery images that may be stored or burned to USB.
