Cove 25.7 Release Notes – Summer in the Cove

Eric Harless, Head Backup Nerd for Cove Data Protection, talks about the latest updates in the 25.7 Release

It’s been a hot summer – but in the Cove, we always keep it cool.

This release focuses on improvements to the User Management interface, Microsoft 365 backup, recovery services, and on-prem backup manager.

Let’s kick off this release with an exciting development from our team related to Google Workspace.

We’re ecstatic to announce that backup and recovery for Google Workspace is on its way to Cove!

We know that this is something you’ve been asking for – and we’re inviting partners and customers to join our exclusive limited preview.

Influence our roadmap and co-create this functionality with us by applying today via our survey to be considered for early access.

We are introducing a significant design update to the User Management interface – bringing a fresh look and feel, along with a more intuitive user experience.

  • Simplified workflows by reducing click paths to essential features for faster access
  • Clearer visibility and management of user roles
  • More granular tools to locate and manage users

Several improvements were made to improve Microsoft 365 backup performance and reliability that allow for faster and more complete data protection.

  • Adopted Microsoft delta queries making SharePoints backups up to 50x faster
  • Reduces throttling and allows for more efficient resource usage
  • Backups now continue processing data if there is an issue retrieving permissions for certain items
  • Enables more complete backups even if there are minor permission issues
  • Backups for historical tenants and data sources with no content selected are no longer processed – reducing delays and speeding up the backup queue.

The following customer-reported issues have been fixed to improve the reliability of our recovery services:

  • Device fails to boot and displays a “Choose an operating system” screen
  • Restores fail with the error: “The object ‘vim.VirtualMachine:vm…’ has already been deleted or has not be completely created.”
  • “LiveBR::GetAllNodeSlides fails.”

Improvements were made to our backup manager that improve the Linux System State recovery experience and our ongoing efforts to support FIPS compliance.

When restoring Linux machines, users will now see a progress bar with the time remaining and percentage (%) completed.

Before: No progress bar, time remaining, or percentage completed shown – leaving users uncertain about when their Linux restores will complete.
After: Progress bar, time remaining (ETA), and percentage completed are shown on the very bottom – allowing users to confidently estimate when their Linux machines will be back online.

As part of our ongoing efforts to support FIPS compliance, we’ve made key updates to underlying libraries:

  • Upgraded to a provider-based architecture, enabling future support for FIPS-validated cryptographic modules
  • Now supports OpenSSL as its encryption backend, aligning with our FIPS readiness goals
  • Moving from OpenSSL 1.0.2 to OpenSSL 3 to enable compatibility with FIPS-validated providers.
  • Reminder: as part of our VMware EOL project, this update does not support ESXi 6.5 or earlier. Please upgrade to 6.7 or newer before September 2025.

That’s all folks! Keep it breezy this summer and don’t forget to subscribe to the Release Notes homepage so that you get notified about the latest and greatest updates to Cove!
