Announcing Availability of MSP Backup & Recovery Version 17.5

We are pleased to announce the general availability of version 17.5 of SolarWinds MSP Backup & Recovery. This release is now available for download directly from within the Management Console or our download site.

Version 17.5 is our June release and includes the following updates and enhancements:

Add Device and Automatic Deployment Enhancements – We’ve simplified new device creation and deployment. Now when you select Add from the Management Console you will have the option to create individual devices to be deployed manually or used to setup Automatic deployment which will create a unique command that can be used to deploy multiple devices for a specified end-customer.

To add an individual device:

  • Click Add
  • Step 1: Search or Add the End Customer
  • Step 2: Select Download as the installation method
  • Step 3: Enter a device name | Assign a Product | Select an OS
  • Click Next

  • Click the link to Download the latest Backup Manager version
  • Use the displayed credentials to complete the installation
  • Optionally, copy credentials to the Clipboard or send them using your Email client
  • Click Finish

To add and deploy multiple devices

  • Click Add
  • Step 1: Search or Add the End Customer
  • Step 2: Select Automatic deployment as the installation method
  • Step 3: Select a Backup profile, No profile or add a new profile
  • Click Next

  • Click the link to Download the latest Backup Manager version
  • Open a Command Prompt as an Administrator
  • Use the displayed command on one or more systems to deploy the software
  • Optionally, copy the command to the Clipboard for use in a custom script or remote deployment tool

AES-256 bit Encryption – We have updated the Backup Manager installation process to default to AES-256 bit encryption for all new installations. You can verify your current encryption level in the device Audit log or Internal info page.

Note: Partners with existing devices using AES-128 bit encryption can issue a Remote Command from the Management Console to use AES-256 bit encryption for all future jobs.

Management Console Enhancements

Drag & Drop Column Management – Users can now change the order of columns in the Device view of the Management Console through simple drag & drop of the columns.

Last Successful Backup Status Change – We have made changes to the logic we use when reporting successful backups that involve the use of a LocalSpeedVault.  The Management Console | Device view column labeled ‘Last successful’ now refers to ” The last successful backup session that 100% synchronized to the remote storage”. This change is to help ensure that backup jobs completing to the LocalSpeedVault are reported as unsuccessful and are flagged red if they have not synchronized to remote storage within 48 hours.

Local Speed Vault Synchronization Percentage – Users can now see the synchronization percentage of their Local Speed Vault from the Device view in the Management Console.  Users can add the following columns to monitor synchronization.

| Last successful | LSV | LSV status | Storage status |

Local Sessions Displayed in Device History – Users of the Management Console can now see local-only sessions that have not yet full synchronized to cloud storage.  These sessions are marked with an (L) in the Device | History | Status column.  In addition, all backups following a seed backup will show (L) until the seed has been uploaded to the remote storage.

Customer issues

Upgrading to version 17.5

Once posted, Standalone users of IASO Online Backup, MAX Backup and MSP Backup & Recovery may begin upgrading to the latest version.

For the highest level of compatibility, it is recommended that partners upgrade all of their backup and recovery tools to the latest version at the same time to maintain full compatibility. This includes the Backup Manager, Recovery Console, Virtual Drive, Bare Metal Recovery, Servertool and StorageNode software.

Integrated users of Managed Online Backup (integrated w/ MSP RMM) or MSP Backup (integrated w/ N-Central) should not attempt to upgrade to version 17.5 until they are notified to do so.  These platforms will be made available and updated on a separate schedule.

Backup Manager

Users may download the latest Backup Manager from the download section of our website or download links within the Management Console. The latest Backup Manager release will also be distributed via our auto update server shortly (typically 2 weeks) following the initial release.

Virtual Drive

If installed, the Virtual Drive component will automatically update with the Backup Manager. When these binaries are updated, Virtual Drive will notify you that a reboot of the Backup Manager is needed to complete the update.

Management Console

Primary development efforts are focused on the online version of our Management Console and no updates are required on your part.

Storage Nodes – Mandatory updates for “Software Only” partners

It is mandatory that “Software Only” partners, those hosting their own private cloud storage, update all of their Storage Nodes to at least version 17.3 prior to upgrading or deploying version 17.x Backup Manager software at their client locations.  The latest Storage Node software installers can be found in the Advanced Download section of the Management Console or on the download section of our website.  Auto updates for storage nodes are a available once you have moved to version 17.3 or later.

Prior Versions & Other Tools

You may also download the latest and prior versions of these and other tools from the download section of the online Management Console as not all tools are currently distributed via Auto Update.
