We’re happy to share software-scanner.exe version 6.11.2 has been released. This release focuses on reliability and quality improvements based on your feedback and what we’ve observed in the field.
Fixes
- Temporary folder cleanup: The scanner creates temp folders under C:\windows\temp named waapi-##########. Earlier versions sometimes left these folders behind. Version 6.11.2 now removes the folders it creates and also cleans up orphaned folders from previous versions.
- Fewer hangs and CPU spikes: In rare cases, earlier versions could become unresponsive and drive up CPU usage (sometimes leaving multiple scanner instances running). This release adds safeguards to reduce hangs and ensures older versions of the scanner are removed properly. If you notice a hung software-scanner.exe process using high CPU, perform a system reboot or kill the software-scanner.exe process to allow the new version to update.
Improvements
- Scan schedule update: The scanner now checks for updates hourly, but only processes/uploads when it detects a change (max 1 upload per 24 hours). If no changes are detected for 7 days, it performs one full upload weekly to keep data fresh. This replaces the fixed 00:00/06:00/12:00/18:00 (agent local time) schedule and helps avoid missed scans/uploads when an agent is offline at those exact times.
- Scan on demand (rolling out): The agent can now accept scan-on-demand requests and complete a full local scan within ~15 minutes. We’ll be enabling the UI experience in Vulnerability Management over the coming weeks; the agent-side capability is included in this release.
Deployment
No action is required for deployment as modern agents will update automatically. To confirm the update, check that 6.11.2 is the only subfolder under \Msp Agent\components\software-scanner.
Thanks for partnering with us and we appreciate your feedback and your continued trust in Vulnerability Management.
