Cove 25.9 – Stronger Protection, Smarter Recovery

Eric Harless, Head Nerd for Cove, walks through the latest updates in Cove 25.9

Welcome to our favorite time of the month! Cove 25.9 introduces key enhancements that helps ensure more robust data protection, streamlines recovery workflows, and delivers deeper reporting insights. Let’s dive into the Cove!

Reminder: Cove 25.9 drops support for VMware ESXi 6.7 and earlier. Upgrade to a later version of ESXi to ensure continued coverage.

We’re excited to announce the external preview of Linux Bare-Metal Recovery (BMR), along with enhanced functionality for Linux System State and macOS devices to help ensure more robust data protection.

  • A fully automated way to recover Linux devices after disasters such as a failed system update or corrupted disk layout.
  • Users can now download Cove Rescue Media directly from the Cove console to perform a seamless recovery.
  • Improved backup stability.
  • Expanded support for more Linux distributions.
  • Optimized backup sizes so that they are faster, take up less storage, and are more cost-effective.
  • Improved logic for accessing files and folders on macOS devices.
  • If a “permission denied” filesystem error occurs:
    • With Full Disk Access, affected files are skipped and backup completes without errors.
    • Without Full Disk Access, backup finishes with errors, and the user is notified about missing permissions.

We’ve streamlined the restore process across various options to ensure more seamless, efficient, and reliable recoveries in a disaster scenario.

  • Backups can now be restored directly to an existing VM in Azure with the original VM name and configuration – simplifying and speeding up the restore process.
  • Additionally, you can restore only the OS disk while retaining current data disks and quickly reattach it to the VM for additional time savings.
  • Backups can now be restored directly in VHD format for One-time Restores to Hyper-V – making the process faster and more seamless by eliminating the need for manual conversion.

In addition, the following customer-reported issues have been fixed to improve the reliability of our recovery services.

  • Issue: Restores could fail with the error “Failed to open virtual disk”, typically on recovery agents with low resources.
  • Fix: Additional check added to automatically detach disks from the recovery agent if they were not removed during the previous restore process.
  • Issue: Restores could fail with the error “Failed to open VHD disk. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process”.
  • Fix: Adjusted timeout handling to ensure proper processing in such cases.

The Executive Summary Report (ESR) – designed to highlight KPIs and insights for MSPs and IT teams to share with their customers or key stakeholder for easy monthly business reviews – has entered external preview!

  • Refined Report Content – Reports now exclusively include Microsoft 365 data that is being protected.
  • Improved Readability – Reporting format has been enhanced for better clarity.
  • Updated Documentation – Comprehensive explanations for each metric are now available.
Matt Baylis, Product Marketing Manager for Cove, walks through the Executive Summary Reports that have entered external preview in Cove 25.9.
