Cove 25.4 External Preview of System State Backup and Recovery for Linux

This newest release from the Cove Product Management and Engineering team consists of enhancements to both our notification services and the Microsoft 365 backups.  Additionally, there have been new features and improvements to our continuity offering within Stand-by image and one-time restore.

On-prem agent:

Reintroduction of System State Backup and Restore for Linux DevicesExternal Preview:

On May 5th we will begin the preview of System State backup and restore on Linux devices — a critical enhancement to ensure robust disaster recovery for Linux environments.

***If you would like access to this preview, send a request to yuliya.yarashuk@n-able.com and it will be enabled for you***

What’s new?

  • System State Plugin will be now available for Linux devices in Backup Manager
  • System State data source in Profiles and Retention Policies will now include Linux devices as well.
  • Devices using the legacy Linux System State solution will be automatically migrated to the new implementation — no manual action required.

The System state data source on Linux allows devices to completely recover after a disaster such as having a non-bootable device after the system update or broken disk layout configuration. The System state data source can be used to migrate the system to another hardware as well.

The Backup Manager utilizes third-party recovery tool Relax-and-Recover (ReaR) to address System state on Linux. ReaR is the leader disaster recovery and system migration utility for Linux based on GPLv3 license written entirely in Bash.

When the backup is started, the Backup Manager invokes ReaR.  ReaR creates the rescue ISO image, which is next backed up by the Backup Manager. During the restore process, the rescue ISO image is restored, and a device is booted from this rescue ISO.

Compatibility

  • Requires latest version of Backup Manager to enable the plugin.

Notification Services:

We have enhanced the Notification Service by adding a “Customer Reference” field to all email templates. This custom field can be used on the Cove Dashboard to create a reference to the end customer account in some other system.

Optional insertion of Customer Reference field

Continuity:

This month, we’re delivering two highly requested features; ability to choose provisioning type for one-time restore to ESXi and the ability to set static private IP for Standby Image and one-time restore to Azure.

Selection of provisioning type from within One-Time Restore to ESXi
Option to set static IP address in one-time restore to Azure

Fixes to improve reliability and restore workflows:

  • Fixed an issue where Standby Image restores failed with the error “Error code: 5:5 (database is locked)”
  • Fixed a problem where restore to Hyper-V failed with “Error #700: Failed to initialize virtual disk” when a non-existing virtual switch was specified.
  • Certificate renewal now works correctly on Hyper-V Recovery Locations.
  • Fixed an issue where Recovery Testing failed with “Task state timeout: PREPARING”
  • Resolved a case where restore operations failed with “Error #700 – Invalid Enumeration Index: 0” when the restored VM name matched the host name.
  • Fixed an issue where Recovery Testing VMs failed to boot after enabling Trusted Launch on source machines.

Microsoft 365:

Improved Reliability and Performance Improvements Across M365

We’ve rolled out several enhancements to improve speed, efficiency, and reliability:

  • Teams handling of temporary access issues helps prevent failures caused by authorization errors.
  • Exchange backups are now up to 50% faster.
  • SharePoint processing has significantly improved, with backup queues reduced by 3x.
  • System efficiency has been optimized, reducing memory usage by up to 15% and enabling smoother, faster restores.
